After a sushi place and a Brazilian churrascaria, this time I went Czech. My friends and I visited Tommy’s Beer Cafe, in Potts Point. The first of us (myself included) got there at about 19:00, and the place was empty; which doesn’t mean much, since it was a Monday. It is interesting to notice that, although the restaurant has this cute front view, the actual entrance is on the side, on Kellett Way.
The interior looks nice as well, and quite tipically Czech, apparently. I should mention one of my friends who was present is Czech.
While waiting for the others, we started on the beer, since the Czech Republic is said to have some good options. I started with a Gambrinus Pilsner, he started with a Pilsner Urquell. My beer was pretty good; he said his was not as bitter as it should be, which might be due to the slow movement. Perhaps they hadn’t sold any Urquell until that point. I tried one of those later on, and it was quite good. I had the first Gambrinus right before 19h, when the restaurant is still in happy hour, so it only cost $5. After that, Gambrinus costs $8.20. Urquell is not included in the happy hour, and costs $9.90.
Once the rest of the party arrived, we went on to the food. The menu had a good number of options for main meals, and most of them looked interesting. I decided on a Vienna Schnitzel. That’s two veal schnitzels, kipfler potatoes, steamed vegetables and pickled gherkin aioli.
It was quite good. The potatoes and vegetables were light and soft in flavour, while the veal brought everything together nicely. The price was within the acceptable range, $23.50. I must say, however, that had I been hungry, the size of the meal wouldn’t have been enough for me. Other than that, I can say the service was good, if not perfect – before the full group arrived, we were kind of left aside, but after we were all there, they were around to get us food and drinks whenever necessary.
Overall, the experience was pretty good, and I will definitely consider going back there, particularly to enjoy their happy hour, with cheaper beer from 5-7 p.m.
Tommy’s Beer Cafe is at 42 Kellett Street, , Potts Point.
