IX Fantaspoa – Eleição dos melhores e comentários gerais

Depois de dezesseis dias de intensa programação, chegou ao fim na noite de ontem a nona edição do Festival Internacional de Cinema Fantástico de Porto Alegre, o Fantaspoa. O evento contou em sua programação com mais de 100 filmes, entre longas e curtas, ficção e documentários, live action e animação. Vários países estiveram representados, dentre eles Argentina, Chile, Paraguai, México, Estados Unidos, Canadá, Inglaterra, Alemanha, Espanha, Estônia, Austrália, Filipinas e, é claro, Brasil. As sessões ocorreram no Cinebancários, no Cine Santander Cultural e nas salas Paulo Amorim e Eduardo Hirtz da Casa de Cultura Mário Quintana.

Foi a minha primeira participação em um Fantaspoa. Um dos filmes exibidos no festival eu já havia assistido, ainda na Austrália, o britânico Cockneys vs Zombies. Consegui assistir a outros 16 filmes durante o evento – em parte graças às boas promoções oferecidas através do Facebook. A lista dos filmes que eu vi estará no fim deste post. Dez dessas dezesseis sessões foram comentadas, a maioria pelos diretores, mas em alguns casos também por atores, roteiristas e compositores das trilhas sonoras. No geral, foi uma experiência muito divertida. A sala mais confortável é a do Santander Cultural, que conta ainda com o melhor ambiente, de forma geral; o melhor lugar para fazer um lanche, por outro lado, é o Café dos Cataventos, no térreo da Casa de Cultura Mario Quintana.

Em relação à organização, pode-se dizer que o pessoal é bastante apaixonado pelo que faz. As sessões comentadas se desenrolaram a contento, o mediador traduzia bem tanto do inglês quanto do espanhol, as perguntas feitas por ele eram relevantes. Poderia, talvez, haver um intervalo maior entre filmes na ocorrência de sessões comentadas; em alguns casos, houve atrasos no início da projeção seguinte. Fora isso, um ou outro pequeno problema de comunicação, nada que não pudesse ser sanado rapidamente. Tenho ainda que confessar que não me apaixonei pela vinheta do evento, exibida antes de cada filme. Questão pessoal, mas acho que imagens mais interessantes poderiam ser usadas, e a música não me agradou mesmo. Vocês podem conferir abaixo:

Parabéns à equipe e elenco do longa britânico, e também a todos os vencedores, segundos e terceiros colocados. Quem levou o maior número de primeiros lugares foi A Casa de Tolerância (5). Quem apareceu entre os três primeiros mais vezes foi The Human Race (8 vezes, contra 7 de A Casa de Tolerância e 7 Caixas).

O único que eu considerei uma experiência ruim foi o último, Cartas para Angel, uma malfadada tentativa de emular o surrealismo de Buñuel. Muitos dos títulos, apesar de independentes, usam ferramentas – e cometem erros – bem comuns ao cinema mainstream. Os seis primeiros da lista, entretanto, são filmaços, e seria muito bom para todos se eles encontrassem distribuidores no Brasil.

É isso aí. Até o ano que vem.

 

 

Meus palpites para o Oscar 2013

Bom, chegou a hora em que todo mundo tenta adivinhar quem vencerá o Oscar. Eu não sou perito em premiações; sou mais do tipo de ver os filmes e dizer qual eu prefiro do que de tentar entrar na mente dos votantes. Mas vou tentar de qualquer forma. Em negrito estão os indicados de cuja vitória eu me sinto mais seguro. Entre parenteses estão os meus preferidos.

Em relação às outras categorias, ou eu não me importo ou não vi os filmes. Em geral, estou apostando que:

- Os votantes vão apelar ao seu filme preferido (Argo) em categorias nas quais não queiram pensar muito pra votar.

- Votantes que gostaram de Argo e não poderão dar a ele o prêmio de melhor diretor – porque aparentemente só gente burra votou na escolha dos indicados – tentarão compensar isso. Este ítem e o anterior são os motivos pelos quais acho que Argo levará prêmios como trilha sonora, roteiro e edição. Sua vitória como melhor filme é virtualmente certa.

- Harvey Weinstein e sua fonte inesgotável de dinheiro e influência se traduzirão em dois prêmios de atuação para O Lado Bom da Vida, um deles bastante não-merecedor (De Niro) e um que é digno de reconhecimento, mas não deveria triunfar sobre uma competidora mais forte (J-Law e Riva, respectivamente).

- Steven Spielberg ganhará o prêmio de consolação, já que fora isso Lincoln vai fracassar (12 indicações e dois prêmios), e porque os três diretores que deveriam brigar pelo prêmio (Bigelow, Tarantino e, obviamente, Ben Affleck) não estão na lista.

- Valente e Paperman vão ganhar porque sim. Aparentemente, a Academia não dá a mínima, só olha quem está por trás dos filmes e dá o prêmio ao estúdio que os fez. Valente é realmente, realmente abaixo da média, o tipo de filme que gera desconforto apenas por estar entre os indicados, e ainda vencerá, o que será terrível para a Academia, partindo do pressuposto de que os votantes querem ser reconhecidos como pessoas que sabem diferenciar um filme de um assento de privada.

- Skyfall é a barbada da noite. Se outra canção ganhar, mate alguém que esteja por perto e ponha a culpa no Oscar. Você será inocentado.

Então é isso. Provavelmente vou errar umas tantas dessas previsões. Se meus favoritos vencerem, ao invés dos que acho que vão vencer, não me importo nem um pouco de estar errado,

My guesses for the Oscar 2013

Well, everybody’s trying to guess who will win the Academy Awards this coming Sunday. I’m no expert in awards; I’m more about watching the movies and stating my preference than attempting to get in the mindset of voters. But I’ll give it a go, anyway. In bold are the ones I’m more certain will win. In parenthesis are my preferences for each category.

Best Picture – Argo (Django Unchained)

The other categories I either don’t care about or haven’t seen the movies. In general, I’m betting that:

- Voters will go to their default favorite movie (Argo) for categories they may not want to put a lot of thought into.

- Voters who liked Argo and can’t give it best director – because apparently only dumb people voted to choose the nominees – will try to make up for it. This item and the previous one combined are the reason why I think Argo will take awards like score, screenplay and editing. Its victory in the best picture category is virtually certain.

- Harvey Weinstein and his endless supply of money and influence will translate into two acting awards for Silver Linings Playbook, one of them greatly undeserved (De Niro) and one that’s worthy of recognition, but shouldn’t prevail over a stronger competitor (J-Law and Riva, respectively).

- Steven Spielberg will get a consolation prize because Lincoln will otherwise crash and burn (12 nominations and 2 awards), and because the three directors that should be battling for the award (Bigelow, Tarantino and obviously Ben Affleck) are not on the list.

- Brave and Paperman will win just because. Apparently, the Academy doesn’t give much of a shit, just looks at who’s behind each movie and awards the studio that made it. Brave is really, really subpar, the kind of movie that should be causing eyes to roll just for being nominated, and then it’ll win, which is terrible for the Academy, assuming they wanna be seen as people who know the difference between a movie and a toilet seat.

- Skyfall is the surest shot. If any other song wins, kill someone who’s around you and blame it on the Oscars. You’ll get away with murder.

Yeah, well, I’ll probably get a lot of these wrong. If my favourites win, rather than the ones I think will win, I don’t mind being wrong at all.

Prós e Contras Movie Awards 2013

    

    

Welcome to the second edition of Prós e Contras Movie Awards! Just like I did last year, I’ve selected the best representatives of the seventh art through 2013, in a series of categories. But there is one major difference from last year. Previously, I elected my favourites among films released commercially in Brazil during the previous year, and then translated the entry and posted it in English. This time around, I chose to do the English and Portuguese awards separetely, so the Portuguese one is still about movies released in Brazil in 2012, but the one you’re about to read concerns movies released in their original countries last year. That means movies that got to Brazil late, such as The Artist, compete in the Portuguese award, but not in this one. On the other hand, movies that were not eligible there will be present here (most of the Oscar movies, for example).

Rules: movies released in 2012 anywhere in the world are eligible, as long as they were released commercially. By “released commercially”, I mean movies that were released in cinemas or straight to rental/purchase, not being considered movies which were only shown in festivals. There is something new in the “Breakthrough Performance” category: since the reason for this category is to acknowledge the promising work of newcomers, I’ve decided to expand the pool of nominees from five to ten.

Holy Motors!

The most awarded movies were Holy Motors (7 awards), Life of Pi (3) and Silver Linings Playbook (2). What can I say? I loved Holy Motors. The only other movie that might compete with it was Django Unchained. Unfortunately for Tarantino’s movie, it was strong in all the categories where Holy Motors was unbeatable. Django was my second choice for movie and director (and also original screenplay, that went to Zero Dark Thirty).

The most nominated movies were Holy Motors (9 nominations), Skyfall (8) and Django Unchained (7).

* The breakthrough performance award doesn’t refer exclusively to artists who had never been in any film before; on the contrary, it may include artists who had never had the opportunity to stand out, but managed to do so when said opportunity was provided. In the category in question, the performance evaluated is the one in the job mentioned – for example, although J.C. Chandor is also the director of Margin Call, he stands out for his job as a writer (and his job as a director didn’t add or subtract from his chance to win).

** Unlike the Oscars, here there is no distinction between soundtrack composed directly for the movie and soundtrack that uses preexisting music. The film that best used music to creat atmosphere and add to the narrative gets awarded.

Prêmio Prós e Contras de Cinema 2013

     

     

Bem-vindos ao segundo Prêmio Prós e Contras de Cinema! Assim como no ano passado, elejo aqui os melhores da sétima arte ao longo do ano passado em várias categorias.

Regras: são elegíveis apenas filmes lançados comercialmente no Brasil ao longo do ano de 2012. Por “comercialmente” entendem-se filmes lançados nos cinemas ou diretamente para compra ou locação, e excluem-se filmes exibidos apenas em festivais de cinema. Como é comum que filmes cheguem tardiamente ao Brasil, a lista deste ano inclui vários filmes lançados mundialmente (ou pelo menos em seus países de origem) em 2011 (e até um ou outro de 2010). Haverá uma alteração em relação ao ano passado, na categoria revelação. A razão da existência de tal categoria é trazer atenção a artistas novos que se mostram promissores, e por isso resolvi aumentar o número de indicados de cinco para dez.

No fim deste post, vocês poderão encontrar a lista de todos os filmes elegíveis a que assisti, em ordem de preferência.

Os filmes mais premiados foram Holy Motors (6 prêmios), As Aventuras de Pi, Guerreiro e O Espião que Sabia Demais (2 prêmios cada). O que posso dizer? Adorei Holy Motors, considero o melhor do ano passado sem concorrência direta. O que chegou mais perto foi O Artista, que seria meu segundo ou terceiro colocado em quase todas as categorias, mas acabou levando só um prêmio.

Os filmes mais indicados foram Holy Motors (9 indicações), 007 – Operação Skyfall e O Artista (8 indicações cada) e Drive (7 indicações).

* O prêmio de artista revelação não se refere exclusivamente a artistas que nunca haviam participado de nenhum filme, podendo incluir artistas que nunca haviam recebido oportunidade de se destacar, e quando receberam pela primeira vez, souberam aproveitar. The Tenth Academy Award Best Film Nominee 2013

As most of you must know by now, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) has announced the list of nominees for this year’s Academy Awards. The list of nominations for Best Motion Picture of the Year brings nine entries, which are:

As you might be aware, the rules allow for anything from five up to ten nominees in this category. To be nominated, a movie must be placed in the top 10 general count of the voting, and must also have been the top pick of at least 5% of voters. What I want to know from the readers is:

What movie would you select to fill the spot that the AMPAS voters left open?

Does this year’s more-than-surprising hit Skyfall deserve to make it? Was The Master unjustly forgotten? Would you like to see a comic book adaptation, such as The Avengers or The Dark Knight Rises? What about the sci-fi of Prometheus and Looper? And the animations, like Wreck-it Ralph and Frankenweenie? Any other movie you believe was snubbed? My most awaited movies for 2013

Earlier today I posted a similar entry, in Portuguese. That list included movies that have already been released, but have not yet opened commercially in Brazil. For the English version, I will not include such movies, which takes out Silver Linings Playbook, Hitchcock, The Master and Django Unchained (even though none of them have opened in Australia either, which leaves me thinking studios have something against countries I live or lived in). Well, let’s get to the list, then.

10. The Bling Ring (Sofia Coppola) – I am a fan of Sofia’s work, and there is not one of her movies that I disliked. Nothing indicates that that will change with The Bling Ring.

09. Zero Dark Thirty (Kathryn Bigelow) – Pretty simple, I want to find out if Bigelow can pull of something as good and precisely spot-on as The Hurt Locker. Here’s to hoping she succeeds!

08. Much Ado About Nothing (Joss Whedon) – Yeah, Whedon is in heaven thanks to the indisputable success of The Avengers. And yeah, it’s a play by Shakespeare. But what makes me really want to watch this movie is that Whedon will once again be working with Amy Acker, Nathan Fillion (who just might be the coolest guy on television these days) and Alexis Denisof, my favourite actor from the whole Buffyverse.

07. The World’s End (Edgar Wright) – Not everyone associates the name with the movies, but Edgar Wright is the director of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Oh, and also two movies where he worked with actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, who join him again for The World’s End. Which movies am I talking about, you ask? Well, let me tell you, my friend who needs more laughter in your life: Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, nothing less than two of the funniest comedies in years!

06. Pacific Rim (Guillermo del Toro) – At first, the story didn’t really interest me that much. And I didn’t fall in love with the trailer. But when I think that this is basically Jaspion directed by del Toro, I can’t help but wish that this turns out to be fantastic.

05. World War Z (Marc Forster) – I’m not really a fan of Forster, but… Zombies! And what’s more: Brad Pitt fighting zombies! Oh, and the trailer is great.

04. Star Trek Into Darkness (J.J. Abrams) – 2009′s Star Trek competes all the way with Casino Royale as the most intelligent reimaginings of well-established franchises. Just for that, and because the team in charge of the sequel is essentially the same, one could already get high hopes for this one. Then the trailers came and expectations rose. And then I got the chance to watch the prologue in 3D in the big screen, and this has become one of my most expected blockbusters for the year. To read what I wrote about the prologue, click here.

03. Before Midnight (Richard Linklater) – Whoever has watched Before Sunrise and Before Sunset doesn’t need to wonder why this one is here. Whoever hasn’t, stop what you’re doing and watch them.

02. To the Wonder (Terrence Malick) – From here will come the most criticism about this list, but I consider The Tree of Life to be one of the best movies in the history of cinema. And Malick has also presented us with nothing less than The New World and The Thin Red Line. If To the Wonder were a documentary about grass growing, it would still make the list. And the only reason why it’s not on top is because it’s competing with…

01. Man of Steel (Zack Snyder) – Superman is my favourite fictional character. Out of all. Of course, the experience of living through the expectation for Superman Returns to see it fall short left scars – and I even like Returns, there are some fantastic scenes there. But the box office results were so bad they buried the rebirth of the franchise. Until the project for Man of Steel came along. The cast seemed promising. The presence of Christopher Nolan gave some fans a nearly sexual arousal. The director being Zack Snyder stirred some controversy, but I like his style. And then came the teaser trailers, with the same images but different narrations. And what images! The cinematography is beautiful! Then came the full trailer, and any doubts left from Superman Returns vanished. I now believe that Man of Steel can be the Superman movie I always wanted to see. I’ll have to wait six months to find out, and it will be a cruel wait.

Os filmes mais aguardados de 2013

Para o meu gosto, 2012 foi um pouco mais fraco que 2011. Foi um bom ano, mas faltou algo. Faltou o A Árvore da Vida de 2011, ou o Bastardos Inglórios de 2009. O bom é que tanto Malick quanto Tarantino estarão de volta, então quem sabe um deles repete a dose (ou, quem sabe, ambos – isso explodiria minha cabeça). Tecnicamente, Django Livre já foi lançado, mas chega ao Brasil só em 2013, então é elegível. E é óbvio que estará na lista, mas em que posição? E quem o acompanha? Vejamos.

10. O Lado Bom da Vida (Silver Linings Playbook, David O. Russell, 2012) – David O. Russell vem se mostrando um grande diretor. Some-se a isso as críticas que dizem que teremos duas das melhores atuações do ano (e vale lembrar que Russell conseguiu isso com o elenco de O Vencedor), e há muito o que se esperar.

09. Círculo de Fogo (Pacific Rim, Guillermo del Toro, 2013) – A princípio, a estória não me interessava muito, e nem achei o trailer assim tão fantástico, mas quando penso que Círculo de Fogo é quase um Jaspion dirigido pelo del Toro, não consigo deixar de torcer muito para que seja um filmaço.

08. O Mestre (The Master, Paul Thomas Anderson, 2012) – Mais um da turma dos atrasados, esse até já estreou faz tempo lá fora. Só de olhar para a página do IMDb para o filme, com o nome do diretor e o elenco, já surge uma expectativa. E aí há o trailer, e a esperança vai lá em cima.

07. Hitchcock (idem, Sacha Gervasi, 2012) – Único filme da lista que não tem um diretor de carreira já estabelecida por trás. Mas é um filme sobre as filmagens de Psicose, com o Anthony Hopkins interpretando Alfred Hitchcock – e caracterizado à perfeição. Todo fã do gordinho precisa conferir.

06. Guerra Mundial Z (World War Z, Marc Forster, 2013) – Não sou verdadeiramente um fã do Forster, mas… Zumbis! E mais: Brad Pitt lutando contra zumbis! Ah, e o trailer é ótimo.

05. Além da Escuridão – Star Trek (Star Trek Into Darkness, J.J. Abrams, 2013) – O Star Trek de 2009 compete palmo a palmo com 007 – Cassino Royale como os mais inteligentes retornos a franquias estabelecidas. Só por isso, e pelo fato de a equipe responsável pela sequência é essencialmente a mesma, já se poderia esperar muito deste. Vieram os trailers e a expectativa aumentou. E então eu tive a oportunidade de assistir ao prólogo do filme em 3D, no cinema, e se tornou um dos meus blockbusters mais aguardados para este ano. Para ler o que eu achei do prólogo, clique aqui.

04. Before Midnight (presumivelmente terá o título de Antes da Meia-Noite, Richard Linklater, 2012) – Quem viu Antes do Amanhecer e Antes do Pôr-do-Sol não precisa se perguntar porque Before Midnight está na lista. Quem não viu, pare o que está fazendo e veja.

03. Django Livre (Django Unchained, Quentin Tarantino, 2012) – Aqui está ele, no primeiro lugar do pódio. Considero Bastardos Inglórios a obra-prima do Tarantino, até hoje. E tenho fé de que ele consiga ir além com seu novo filme. O elenco é ótimo e os trailers também. Resta esperar.

02. To the Wonder (ainda sem título no Brasil, Terrence Malick, 2013) – Daqui virão as críticas, mas para mim A Árvore da Vida é um dos melhores filmes da história do cinema (para ler a minha resenha do filme, clique aqui). E Malick ainda ofereceu nada menos que O Novo Mundo e Além da Linha Vermelha. Se To the Wonder fosse um documentário sobre o crescimento da grama, ainda estaria na minha lista de mais aguardados. E só não está em primeiro porque compete com…

01. O Homem de Aço (Man of Steel, Zack Snyder, 2013) – Superman é meu personagem de ficção preferido. Dentre todos. Mas todo fã do Super traz viva a lembrança de Superman – O Retorno. E eu gostei de Returns, tem algumas cenas fantásticas, mas as expectativas não foram alcançadas. O resultado nas bilheterias foi tão abaixo do esperado que encerrou a ideia de prosseguir com a franquia. E então veio o projeto de O Homem de Aço. O elenco parecia promissor. O envolvimento de Christopher Nolan deixou alguns fãs quase sexualmente excitados. A direção nas mãos de Snyder gerou discordâncias, mas eu gosto do estilo dele. E então vieram os dois teaser trailers, com as mesmas imagens, mas narrações diferentes. E que imagens. Fotografia belíssima! Depois, veio o trailer, e foram-se as dúvidas deixadas por Superman Returns. Agora, eu acredito que Man of Steel pode ser o filme do Superman que eu sempre quis ver. Terei que esperar seis meses para descobrir, e será uma espera cruel.

Star Trek Into Darknesss – Review of the extended prologue

As part of the promotional campaign for the new addition to the Star Trek movie franchise, Australian cinema company Hoyts has shown a special screening of the previous movie, the first in this new stage of the series, 2009’s Star Trek. Before the 3-year-old film was shown, the audience was treated to the extended, nine minute long, 3D prologue to Star Trek Into Darkness, which hits American cinemas on May 17, 2013 (in Australia, it opens one day earlier, May 16). Before moving on, let me thank Hoyts for the very nice and well organized event. We were received in a specially prepared area, with drinks available and very friendly staff welcoming the guests.

Well, let’s jump to my impressions of the prologue. First of all, the villain, played by Benedict Cumberbatch, only shows for a few seconds. It’s enough to leave the impression that he is much, much more dangerous than the Romulan villain played by Eric Bana in the previous installment of the franchise. Cumberbatch will apparently give us a memorable antagonist. There is a lot of action in the first nine minutes of the movie, and such action works very well. Particularly, the part involving Spock is very exciting. Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana seem to maintain – or even improve – the chemistry they had in the first film. Although they only share the screen for a few seconds, they’re convincing as the main couple of the movie. If the rest of the action and romance is at least on the same level as the prologue, and if the villain is really as good as he appears to be, only a disaster will make Star Trek Into Darkness a movie less than memorable.

From here on, I’ll describe the scenes from the prologue. If you don’t want SPOILERS, stop reading now.

The movie opens with the dawn of a sunny day, in London. A couple wakes up and gets out of bed. It is easy to notice that something is wrong. Then, the screen shows a low building in conservative style, which contrasts with the futuristic architecture of the center of the city. The building seems isolated, and is surrounded by well-kept gardens. Once the camera shows the inside of the building, it becomes clear that this is a hospital. The couple from the beginning is seen by the bed of a little girl, who is unconscious. Whatever her illness is, it is clearly very grave. The next scene shows a balcony, where the father of the girl is looking away. A man approaches him from behind. This man claims to be able to salve the man’s daughter. When the father asks who he is, the camera focuses on the man’s face, and it is revealed that he is the villain played by Cumberbatch.

Cut to another planet, with tall, reddish vegetation. A masked stranger runs out of a peculiar looking building. It is obvious he’s running away. Soon after, he starts being followed by humanoids who resemble aboriginals. Suddenly, he comes face to face with a huge, monstrous creature, and shoots it with a phaser. The creature falls, and on the other side of it, a man similarly disguised is seen. This man removes his mask, and reveals himself to be “Bones” McCoy. The first one also removes his mask, and turns out to be Captain Kirk. McCoy informs him that the creature was their ride, and they both run as fast as they can, away from the approaching aboriginals, who throw spears at them.

Inside a shuttle, Spock is putting on a special metallic vest. Uhura helps him. As he is preparing, Spock speaks to Kirk, via radio, about mission protocol and the importance of not interfering with the culture of local population. After Spock is suited-up, Uhura asks if he wouldn’t like her to go instead. He responds that would be illogical, since he is already prepared. She says she was joking, and kisses the helmet he’s wearing. By this point, we know that there is a volcano about to erupt, and the shuttle is flying above it. Spock explains that, if he can’t manage to install a device that will stop the volcano’s explosion, the local people will be extinguished. He is lowered from the shuttle into the volcano. Uhura joins Sulu in the controls of the shuttle. The cable that connects Spock to the shuttle breaks, and he falls on a rock in the middle of the volcano. Uhura insists that they try to rescue him, but both Spock and Sulu say that is not possible. The shuttle leaves, Spock stays behind, installing his device.

Kirk and McCoy are still running from the natives. Kirk carries something he stole from them, and suddenly places this object hanging on a tree and opens it, revealing some sort of sacred document. The aboriginals stop chasing the two men and get down on their knees in front of the document. Kirk and McCoy reach a cliff and jump off it. After they dive into the sea, they use propellers that take them to the Enterprise, submerged so that the natives wouldn’t see it. Once inside, Kirk asks about Spock, and is told that he is still in the volcano. Upon returning to the bridge, Kirk gets in contact with his first officer, who says mission protocol must be respected, which prevents the Enterprise from revealing itself to the natives by rescuing Spock. The ship loses contact with Spock. The fear in Uhura’s expression is intense. Kirk e McCoy discuss what to do. Kirk asks the doctor what Spock would do if the places were inverted. McCoy says Spock would let the captain die. Spock finishes installing the device which will save the local people. Lava approaches him. He opens his arms and prepares to die. The camera moves away. End of the prologue.

Well, there you have it. It’s a shame I can’t share the actual images with you. However, as far as my word counts, it will be very much worth watching Star Trek Into Darkness in cinemas, if possible in IMAX and 3D.

Kirk; Zachary Quinto (Margin Call, American Horror Story and Heroes) as Spock; Zoe Saldana (Avatar) as Nyota Uhura; Karl Urban (Dredd 3D and Lord of the Rings) as Leonard “Bones” McCoy; Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz) as Montgomery “Scotty” Scott; Anton Yelchin (Terminator Salvation and Fright Night) as Pavel Chekov; John Cho (Harold & Kumar movies and TV series Go On) as Hikaru Sulu; and Benedict Cumberbatch as the mysterious villain.

Além da Escuridão – Star Trek – Resenha do prólogo estendido

Como parte da campanha promocional do novo filme de franquia Star Trek, a rede de cinemas australiana Hoyts exibiu uma sessão especial do primeiro filma da nova fase da série, lançado em 2009. Antes do Star Trek de 3 anos atrás, foi exibido, em 3D, o prólogo estendido de Além da Escuridão – Star Trek, que chega aos cinemas brasileiros em 26 de julho do ano que vem. Em primeiro lugar, devo dizer que o evento foi bem organizado, os ganhadores da promoção foram recebidos em uma área preparada, com drinks à disposição e funcionários muito simpáticos atendendo aos visitantes.

Mas vamos às minhas impressões sobre o prólogo. Em primeiro lugar, o vilão, interpretado por Benedict Cumberbatch, aparece apenas por uns poucos segundos. É o suficiente para que se fique com a impressão de que ele é muito, muito mais perigoso do que o romulano Nero, vivido por Eric Bana no filme anterior. Cumberbatch aparentemente entregará um antagonista memorável. Há bastante ação nos primeiros nove minutos da obra, e essa ação funciona muito bem. Em particular, a parte que envolve Spock é bastante excitante. Zachary Quinto e Zoe Saldana parecem manter – ou até aprofundar – a química do primeiro filme. Embora contracenem apenas por alguns segundos, convencem como par romântico central. Se o resto da ação e do romance do novo Star Trek for do nível do prólogo, e se o vilão for realmente tão bom quanto aparenta ser, só um desastre tornará Além da Escuridão um filme menos que notável.

A seguir, descrevo as cenas do prólogo. Se você não quer SPOILERS, pare de ler agora.

O filme abre com o amanhecer de um dia ensolarado, em Londres. Um casal acorda e levanta. É fácil perceber que há algum problema na vida deles.  A seguir, vê-se um prédio baixo, em estilo conservador, contrastando com a arquitetura futurista do centro da cidade. O prédio parece isolado, cercado por jardins bem cuidados. Quando as imagens passam a mostrar o interior do prédio, percebe-se que se trata de um hospital. O casal do início é visto, então, no quarto de uma garotinha. Ela não está acordada. Não há dúvidas de que, qualquer que seja seu problema de saúde, ele é grave. A cena seguinte mostra uma sacada, o pai da garota olha para o exterior, e um homem se aproxima dele por trás. O homem afirma ser capaz de salvar a menina. Quando o pai questiona quem ele é, a câmera foca no rosto do homem, que é o personagem interpretado por Benedict Cumberbatch.

Corte para um outro planeta, com vegetação alta e avermelhada. Um estranho mascarado sai de uma construção em estilo peculiar, correndo. É óbvio que está fugindo. Pouco depois, passa a ser seguido por humanoides que lembram índios. Subitamente, ele se depara com uma criatura grande e monstruosa, e atira nela com um faser. A criatura cai, e do outro lado dela vê-se alguém com um disfarce semelhante ao do primeiro homem. O segundo tira sua máscara, e percebe-se que ele é “Bones” McCoy. O outro tira a máscara, mostrando ser o capitão Kirk. McCoy diz que aquela criatura era a montaria deles, e os dois então passam a correr em disparada, enquanto os nativos se aproximam, atirando lanças contra eles.

A bordo de uma nave auxiliar, Spock veste um traje especial. Uhura o auxilia. Enquanto se prepara, Spock conversa com Kirk sobre o protocolo da missão, e a importância de não interferir com a cultura do povo do planeta. Quando Spock está pronto, Uhura pergunta se ele não prefere que ela vá no lugar dele. Ele responde que isso seria ilógico, uma vez que ele já está com o traje. Ela responde que estava brincando, e beija o capacete que ele está usando. A este altura, percebe-se que há um vulcão prestes a entrar em erupção. Spock explica que, caso ele não consiga instalar um dispositivo que impedirá a explosão da cratera, o povo nativo será extinto. O cabo de aço que o conecta à nave se parte, e ele cai sobre uma rocha cercada de lava, no meio do vulcão. Uhura insiste que eles tentem resgatá-lo, mas tanto Spock quanto Sulu dizem que não é possível, a nave precisa sair dali. Eles saem, e Spock fica para trás, instalando o dispositivo em questão.

Kirk e McCoy continuam a fugir dos nativos, que se aproximam. Kirk carrega algo que roubou dos nativos, e subitamente ele coloca o objeto em um ponto do caminho e o abre, mostrando ser alguma espécie de documento sagrado. Os nativos param de persegui-los e se ajoelham. Kirk e McCoy chegam a um penhasco e pulam. Após mergulharem, usam propulsores que os levam até a Enterprise, submersa para evitar que seja vista pelos nativos. Ao chegar à Enterprise, Kirk pergunta por Spock, e é informado de que ele ficou no vulcão. Ao voltar à ponte de comando, ele entra em contato com seu primeiro-oficial, que diz que o protocolo da missão deve ser respeitado, o que impede que a Enterprise se exponha tentando salvá-lo. A nave perde contato com Spock. O medo na expressão de Uhura é notável. Kirk e McCoy discutem o que fazer. Spock termina de instalar o dispositivo que salvará o povo local. A lava se aproxima dele. Ele abre os braços e se prepara para morrer. A câmera se afasta. Fim do prólogo.

É isso aí. É uma pena eu não poder compartilhar com vocês mais do que essa descrição. Mas, no que a minha palavra serve, valerá muito a pena assistir a Além da Escuridão – Star Trek nos cinemas, se possível em IMAX 3D.
